To whom it should concern, I am writing to let you know that the Benowa Tavern has sunk far further than we ever believed it could in terms of serving the most inedible food ever presented to myself, my family and our friends. The worst meals ever served to us in our lives. We do not expect any gastronomic delights - we have frequented the restaurant too often to hold out that much hope - but to have 7 edible and hot meals put in front of us is all that would have been required. Sadly on the Australia Day weekend Saturday - 24 Jan/09 - not even this was possible. 7 cold meals were served to us. 2 were inedible. The manager, when I complained, said she would pass on my comments to the 'chef' There has never been a chef born that would seriously refer to himself by that name, then churn out the muck that usually issues forth from your kitchen. Cook? Still not in the ballpark. You know, my wife routinely refers to your Tavern as 'The Pig Bucket', and happily volunteers to cook rather than endure what she terms as 'eating Pig Swill'. She does deals with me. "How about we don't go out 3 weekends of a month, so that on the 4th weekend, we can go somewhere with great food?" Or if the kids really press her to come, she asks, whilst reading your menu, "What can't they mess up?" It's not really about price, though. Who min

Well, taste was good. However, the pasta was just warm, and the lamb shanks (that looked absolutly fabulous) was so undercooked I should have ordered a special steak knife with big 1" teeth on it. Seriously, this lamb needed at least another 2 hours in the oven. It was cooked, but it was "so tough"!!! Even a housewife knows lamb shanks need a long, slow, roasting in the oven, it should be falling of the bone. The staff (English girl) who I complained too, was brilliant. She offered to bring me another meal, which in hindsight (as I hacked closer to the bone!) I should have accepted. These are all simple things, the flavour is there, but staff should try it before selling it.

Last time I went I was missing the sauce off my meal, when I asked where it was, the young man went back to the kitchen and came back with nothing and proceeded to tell me that it was on there I and the chef said it was and that was it. I re-read the menu as I thought it had changed, no, showed the young man, then he continued to tell me it was there when it obviously is not. Its a simple mistake to rectify for the price you have to pay.

I think the BT is sliding further downhill, as the kitchen can't seem to determine whether they are doing a pub meal or going for the mid-priced kind of fare. At $16 you'd expect the veal parmi to be huge, and full of chips with a nice salad selection. Instead it was small, not fresh, had no ham on it, the chips were soggy and there was bugger-all of them. For $10 this would have been acceptable, but they really need to increase the quality of the food if they are going to keep charging non-pub meal prices. Still, the purpose of the night was to get drunk. And the BT does this quite well, because I was feeling about as average as an underdone veal parmi the next day.

It's not the greatest pub on the coast for food. Inside is a large open dining area and being 'family friendly' this place gets really LOUD with all the kids running around. The food is just passable passable. The roasts are often fatty and the menu range isn't great. Service is quick though which is a bonus. I prefer to come here just for a few drinks and in summer it's nice to sit outside.
