Beautiful Coffee Designs

Other, Gold Coast

Just thought I’d share some beautiful coffee art pictures that came through as an email today. It’s amazing what a barista can do with a toothpick and a bit of talent!

Help! There’s a cat in my pantry

Other

jackson-in-pantry.jpg

This is our naughty cat Jackson who loves to jump in the pantry at every chance he gets. He normally burrows into the back corner and is a pain to get out. Sometimes I don’t even know that he’s jumped in there until I hear a faint meow. He also loves playing a game of jumping on the kitchen bench when I’m making dinner and hiding behind the cookbook stand. He’s been known to steal cheese, sliced salami and has a special penchant for smoked salmon and tandoori chicken.

Foie Gras so Passe

Other

An article by UK newspaper the Times tells how luxury department store, Harvey Nichols has recently bowed to animal rights group pressure and has removed Foie Gras from their stores. This is a trend slowly emerging worldwide which has already seen California and Chicago ban it’s sale and Germany and Italy have banned foie gras production. Many top restaurants are also following suit worldwide and some well known celebs such as Roger Moore and Arnold Schwarzenegger has backed a ban.
Foie gras is not produced in Australia but it is imported from overseas (particularly from France who produce about 75% of the world’s foie gras) and the only place that I know of in Australia that sells it is Simon Johnson.
I for one applaud the decision but some argue that the bans are taking away diners freedom of choice. Now i’m not a vegetarian or overt animal activist (though I do buy the ‘happy hen’ eggs and try to buy organic when I can afford it) but I don’t believe that animals should be tortured and made to suffer for a diners few minutes of pleasure.

Food that catches you by surprise

Other

A couple of weeks ago while on holiday in VIC we went to Abla’s (a very popular and well known lebanese restaurant in Carlton) for dinner. While we were waiting for our friends to arrive they served some appertisers with one of them including little pieces of watermelon. Loving watermelon I dived straight in but shocked the tastebuds when I realised that the pieces had been pickled.
Another time I made the common mistake of mistaking wasabi paste for avocado…. has anyone else ever eaten something that tasted completely different to what they were expecting?
