Twisted Sista Cafe Byron Bay

Byron Bay

We came here for a quick bite of breakfast before heading back up to the Gold Coast.
Having eating rich curries only hours before neither of us wanted anything heavy so we just ordered coffees, a croissant and some toasted sourdough which both came with butter and jam.
It’s a casual cafe which was popular when we visited at breakfast time. They brought out some smoked salmon bagels to put in the glass display which looked fantastic though a little on the pricey side at $9. Our breakfasts were only about $5 - $6 each. The waitress was a bit brusque and bashed down our coffees and meals. If you want a casual breakfast then it’s ok but I would prefer other cafe’s and restaurants for lunch in Byron such as one of my favourites - fishmongers cafe which I didn’t get around to this time.

Bollywood Kitchen Restaurant Byron Bay

Byron Bay

This restaurant is located on Jonson street - about a 5 minute walk from the central main streets of Byron Bay and it is located amongst a cluster of shops near the Woolworths supermarket. It’s not the most attractive location given that it’s in a carpark but the bright yellow front with purple and orange tablecloths looked inviting.
Inside there are colourful fabrics hanging from the roof and plenty of twinkling lights, sequined Indian cusions and tapestries of Indian gods adorning the walls.
We booked our table and it was lucky because the small dining room was already packed. Bollywood kitchen is a little unique in that it serves Indian and Persian food so we decided to sample a mix of the two. The dishes we had included samosas (home made and with well spiced mince inside) and vegetarian pakoras which included battered and fried onion rings, eggplant and I think pumpkin. The entree’s were about $7 each. We also had butter chicken and lamb curry (approx $17 ea), channa masala (spicy chickpeas in a tomato sauce - and they were spicy!!!) and one of the persian chicken dishes. To be honest I was pretty drunk after visiting the Railway Hotel that I can’t remember all the dishes we ordered! I do remember that they were very tasty, well spiced and hot when needed. I was particularly a fan of the lamb curry.

The Railway Hotel AKA Railway Friendly Bar and The Rails in Byron Bay

Byron Bay, Pubs & Bars

The railway hotel also known as the railway friendly bar (and as the locals term it ‘the rails’).
It is positioned back from the road on Jonson street in Byron.
It’s a funky bar that is hugely popular with backpackers and we also saw lots of quirky locals (hippies) downing a few beers and watching the live entertainment that was on. Apparently they have live music every night of the year which is awesome - finally a pub that has music instead of pokie machines! Although to be fair I didn’t see any pokie machines in the whole of Byron.
We only went for a few beers and I didn’t see anyone eating but apparently they do good burgers and the food is meant to be fairly cheap. I will definately come back here again if I’m staying overnight in Byron. I think the beach hotel is great for lunch but this place goes off at night.

The band playing was fantastic and the volume was perfect - you could still have a conversation.

Offshore Bistro & Bar Byron Bay

Byron Bay

This little bar was located almost directly opposite where we were staying so it was a convenient spot to while away a couple of hours before dinner.
It was virtually empty when we popped in for a drink on Saturday afternoon - partly because it was rainy and cold on and off and also perhaps because the bar is out on it’s own - the other bars or restaurants are about 100m or so away so unless you were staying nearby you wouldn’t find it easily.
We ordered a Matilda’s Beach which had stawberry and pineapple juice with vodka, wild strawberry liquor, cranberry and lime and a Caprioska which had lime, palm sugar and vodka ($13 each). I was a bit disappointed with the way they were served as they didn’t come in nice tall cocktail glasses and hence were downed in a few minutes. The waiter however was very friendly and took a while to make them so hopefully he added an extra shot or two!
We then ordered a bottle of rose as my sister wanted white wine and I wanted red. We also ordered some cheese which was advertised on the menu as Enterprise double brie with quince paste for $8.
It was a nice quiet spot away from the crowds but the beer prices were steeper than most of the other pubs and bars around in Byron.

Our Caprioska and Matilda Sunrise cocktails which were $13 each. It was a shame they weren’t in nice tall cocktail glasses considering the cost as we drank them in a matter of minutes.

Beach Hotel Byron Bay

Byron Bay, Pubs & Bars

We were lucky enough to have had yet another weekend away (this time to catch up with my sister who was up from Sydney for her b’day) so after we arrived we all headed down to one of Byron’s icons - the Beach Hotel.
This pub is located right opposite the main beach in the heart of Byron and it is popular for casual lunches, to soak up the sun with a beer at one of the outside tables and to catch some live entertainment. Because it was raining on and off we sat inside (the inside of the pub is huge). They give you a table buzzer to know when to go up and collect your meals and even though the pub was really packed inside all of our meals were ready within about 20 minutes. Mains ranged from $13 - $21 and all were decent sized meals. Nothing flash but they were good value pub meals.
